Grus (The Crane): gift, map and visability

  • Meaning: The Crane
  • Best seen in: October
  • Family: Bayer
  • Latitude: +35° to -90°

Grus or The Crane is one of the 88 constellations modern astronomers have divided the sky into. It's part of the Bayer constellation family. Grus is best seen in October (from latitudes +35° to -90°).

Grus represents a long-necked wading bird, the crane. Sacred to the god Hermes, the constellation was once part of Piscis Austrinu. Johann Bayer created Grus in the 16th century after they straightened out the tail of Piscis so it would not overlap Grus’ head. He did so to honor the bird whose high flight led the ancient Egyptians to make it the symbol of astronomy. It is also known as the Stork, The Heron, and the Flamingo.
