Lupus or The Wolf is one of the 88 constellations modern astronomers have divided the sky into. It's part of the Hercules constellation family. Lupus is best seen in June (from latitudes +35° to -90°).
The Babylonians already knew this constellation as a ‘wolf’. Eratosthenes said that the Centaur was holding the animal towards the altar (the constellation Ara) as though about to sacrifice it. The definitive identification of this constellation with a wolf seems to have started in Renaissance times. Eighteen main stars make up Lupus. Alpha Lupi shines brightest and is 25,000 times brighter than the Sun.
