Like our planet, Mars has well-defined seasons, polar ice caps, numerous volcanoes and canyons, as well as plains and frozen lakes. The problem is that the possibility of liquid water existing on the red planet is low. Because Mars has less gravity than Earth, a person there would be almost 60% lighter, and their lifting capacity would be twice as high. For every four kilograms here, you weigh less than two kilograms on Mars.
The temperature on Mars can vary between 20 degrees Celsius and -153 degrees Celsius, and this is dictated by the seasons and the time of day. An excellent place for those who enjoy a bit of cold weather. Mars is much colder than Earth, simply because it is farther from the sun.
While we breathe Earth’s air everything is fine, but on Mars things are quite different, since the atmosphere is less dense. Even so, there are plans to send people to Mars as early as the next decade, and who knows, maybe even one day colonize the planet.
Where did the name Mars come from?
The planet Mars was named after the Roman God of War. Because of its red color, the Greeks named the planet after Ares, in homage to him. Even Mars’ two moons received mythological names, being the two horses that pull Ares’ chariot. Various other civilizations also named this planet based on its unique reddish color.
How big is this red giant?
Despite being only half the size of Earth, Mars is a completely desert planet, and has almost the same amount of land surface area as our planet. Its diameter is twice that of the moon.
But speaking of size, it’s also home to the largest volcano in our entire solar system. This volcano is almost three times larger than Mount Everest, standing over 25 kilometers high and with a diameter of over 634 kilometers.
Another impressive feature of the planet is its enormous dust storms. These storms are capable of completely covering the planet and can last for months. The seasons are always extreme, since Mars’ orbit around the sun is much more elongated than that of other planets in the solar system.
