His myths and stories haunt humanity to this day! How about learning a little more about the cosmic horror that inhabits the stars in Lovecraft’s work? Truth be told, Lovecraft’s work extends far beyond just what he himself wrote. His influence is so great that even famous bands and various video games, books, films, and even manga have been inspired by Lovecraft’s work to bring their universes and music to life.

Understanding the work and myths created by H.P. Lovecraft

Also known as Cosmicism, cosmic horror is a literary philosophy created by Lovecraft, who was responsible for literally revolutionizing the entire horror genre, attributing to it the most fantastic characteristics.

Lovecraft was a man troubled by terrible nightmares, and his antisocial way of dealing with other humans made him a dark and mysterious figure. Many of his works were, in fact, inspired by his own nightmares, which made them a true universe, full of symbolic and disturbing elements.

You only need to read one of this master of horror’s stories to find yourself looking around at night, wondering what lies in the shadows behind your curtains. The truth is, this terror is the kind that resonates deep within every man and woman through the denial of the existence of any God. Humanity is simply alone and literally insignificant, disposable within the perspective of all existence.

This unique horror explores the value of a human being, comparing it to the life of an insect or plant. The human race will disappear, and others will come to take its place, but they too will meet the same terrible fate. Nothing has real meaning, everything is ephemeral. Morality, values, and feelings are nothing more than dust running through the hourglass of time.

Lovecraft’s characters and “Gods”

Still, some of Lovecraft’s creations might be mistaken for gods, but they are part of the overall ideology that underpins cosmic horror, since none of these entities are supernatural, but rather extraterrestrial, subject to understandings and laws whose existence no human can even fully contemplate, beyond any capacity for comprehension.

These beings have no concept of morality, but they are all inherently dangerous to humanity, and some of them simply don’t bother to pay attention to the finite lifespan of human beings.

“The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and most powerful kind of fear is fear of the unknown. Few psychologists have disputed these facts, and their acknowledged truth must establish, for all time, the authenticity and dignity of fantastic horror fiction as a literary form.” These are the words of Lovecraft.

Lovecraft loved cosmology and astronomy. Because of this, he created the Cthulhu Mythos (don’t try to pronounce that name, as it doesn’t have a pronunciation that can be vocalized by humans!). This mythology presents the most ancient beings of all creation, creatures that move between planes and travel through the stars and the cosmos simply to destroy what lives, or to colonize worlds in whatever way they deem most plausible.

Some of these beings are as old as the very notion of existence. Compared to these creatures, masters of the entire universe, man is nothing but dust. Lovecraft created a dense universe that has become essential reading for anyone who loves a good story and wants to dream at night about what lies beyond the stars, navigating the insanity of the nightmares created by an author who had very little of the human in him.

Question everything, or don’t question anything. In the end, it won’t make a difference, after all, our existence is merely fleeting, and in the depths of R’lyeh, one of the Ancient Ones sleeps, and his troubled dreams are a harbinger of our future. Ph’nglui mglw’nafh Cthulhu R’lyeh wgah’nagl fhtagn… Sweet dreams!
