Dit sterrenbeeld staat op plek negen in grootte van alle 88 sterrenbeelden. Centaurus bevat 11 sterren met bekende planeten, maar heeft verder geen deep space-objecten. Het sterrenbeeld beslaat ongeveer 1.060 vierkante graden in de nachtelijke hemel en behoort tot de Hercules-familie van sterrenbeelden.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #15acdf;\">Waarneming<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Proxima Centauri is te zien in zijn thuisconstellatie in het derde kwadrant van het zuidelijk halfrond, voornamelijk tussen de +25 en -90<sup>ste<\/sup> breedtegraden. Omdat deze ster erg zwak is, kan hij niet met het blote oog worden bekeken. Proxima Centauri krijgt de spectrale klasse M5Ve of M5Vie, wat betekent dat het een kleine hoofdreeksster of een sub dwerg kan zijn. De ster blijft mogelijk in de hoofdreeks gedurende de komende vier biljoen jaar! Ook heeft deze ster een massa van 12,3 procent in vergelijking met onze zon. Bovendien staat de binnenkant van deze ster bekend als convectief. Dit houdt in dat de as die overblijft uit de thermonucleaire fusie van waterstof door de ster circuleert, in plaats van zich bij de kern te verzamelen.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #15acdf;\">Helderheid van de ster<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Proxima Centauri heeft een schijnbare magnitude van 11.05 en is ook geclassificeerd als een flare ster van het UV Ceti-type. Dit betekent dat de ster plotselinge uitbarstingen van helderheid kan hebben die vari\u00ebren tussen 11,0 en 11,9 magnitudes.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #15acdf;\">Geschiedenis en mythologie<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Historisch gezien werd Proxima Centauri in 1915 ontdekt door een Schots-Zuid-Afrikaanse astronoom genaamd Robert Innes. In de Griekse mythologie wordt Centaurus (de Centaur) afgebeeld als half mens, half paard. Van dit mythische figuur denkt men dat het Chiron, de mentor van Hercules, vertegenwoordigd.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"blue-box\">Proxima Centauri is niet zomaar een hemels object, er zijn een aantal harde feiten en echte betekenissen over bekend.
