Furthermore, it should be noted that Gemini borders the Coachman and the Lynx to the north and the Unicorn and the Little Dog to the south. You are certainly curious to know the main characteristics of the Gemini constellation. Are you also wondering how many stars Gemini has? Does the mythology of this constellation interest you? You may be getting all the answers in this comprehensive file.

The constellation Gemini is one of the thirteen constellations of the zodiac that are crossed by the solar system over a period of one year.

It is limited by the constellation Taurus which is on its left side and that of Cancer on the right. When we refer to the legends presented by mythology, this constellation would embody a story between two brothers. These are Pollux and Castor who also gave their name to the main stars of this constellation.

This Gemini star cluster is made up of two main meteor showers. These are the elipson-geminids and the geminids. The activity of these two swarms does not occur at the same time. This constellation is crossed by the sun from June 21 until July 20.

Observation of the constellation allows us to notice that in the northern part, it is close to the Coachman and the Lynx. On its southern side, we can see the Unicorn and the little Dog. Gemini is a sign of the zodiac, and was considered an integral part of the constellations that were listed by Ptolemy. The Gemini constellation is made up of several stars, of different colors.

The main characteristics of the Gemini constellation

It should be noted that the constellation Gemini is perceptible at the level of the Big Dipper. Looking at it, you will notice that the diagonal of the large cart is pulling towards Pollux. Also, you will see that the same alignment points to Orion. Furthermore, you should know that you will be able to observe this constellation following the alignment of Rigel and Betelgeuse.

Regarding the apparent appearance of the Gemini constellation, it must be said that it has a magnitude of 4. Which makes it very visible, if the conditions are right. You can also notice that the stars of the constellation observe a double alignment. The first is located on a North-East, South-West axis. The direction thus evolves from the head of Gemini to Orion. On the other hand, the second alignment goes in a northwest, southeast direction. There you will find the Castor/Pollux pair. Finally, it should be noted that the Castor/Pollux couple also represents the arms, knees and feet of the two Geminis.

Finally, note that, if visible to the naked eye, the constellation Gemini would look like two children holding hands. However, due to the paleness of some of these stars, you will only be able to see a simple rectangle. To contemplate it in its splendor, you will need to use a telescope.

The Gemini constellation is the one observed from the Great Bear. That is to say from Pollux to Orion. This is a constellation that is perfectly observable due to its magnitude which is 5. As with all constellations, it is necessary that all the necessary conditions are met to guarantee optimal viewing.

The stars that compose it are distributed in two directions. A first equivalent to that of the North East and another towards the South West. The brightest star in this constellation is Beta Geminorum, also called Pollux. It is surrounded by certain bordering constellations, namely Cancer, Coachman, Unicorn, Lynx, Orion, Little Dog and Taurus. In this constellation, two stars called Castor and Pollux are the most popular.

Close observation allows us to notice that their asterism is similar to two silhouettes holding hands and facing each other. These silhouettes are attributed to two twins according to a mythological legend. The star Castor is located on the side of the constellation Coach while Pollux is closer to Little Dog. One of the main characteristics of the constellation is that it is the only one in the system which has two stars of identical luminosity and which are so close together.

The main stars of the constellation Gemini

As a reminder, you should know that astronomers classify stars according to their degree of brightness. Thus, they assign a letter of the Greek alphabet to each of the stars in order to be able to distinguish them. The star with the greatest light signaling, they will give it the letter Alpha. The second will have the title of Beta and so on in chronological order. However, it should be noted that the constellation Gemini is an exception. Indeed, its most scintillating star, namely Pollux, was described as Beta and not Alpha. The justification would be found in the fact that Castor precedes Pollux in the order of the earth’s rotation. Having said this, it should be understood that the Gemini constellation is made up of two main stars (Castor and Pollux), a globular cluster M 35 and several nebulae.

The double star: Castor and Pollux are not the only stars in this constellation. A double star was also discovered there by researcher Von Struve in 1829. This star is located in the middle of the constellation. It is also because of this position that the name wesat, which means “middle” in Arabic, was given to it.

Propus: The star Propus is also a component of the constellation Gemini. It is an eclipsing binary that was discovered in 1781.

The nebulae of the Gemini constellation: The planetary nebula NGC 2371 is also located in the Gemini constellation. Its spectrum is 0e, with a magnitude of 8.2. It was discovered by Herschel in 1785. Still in the category of planetary nebulae in this constellation is NGC 23 92. With a magnitude of 9.9, it is also known as Clown. Some time after its discovery, calculations will reveal that this nebula is indeed a planet in the solar system, namely Uranus. The constellation Gemini is therefore made up of stars, nebulae and clusters.

The Castor star

This is how the two brothers began to be invoked in order to avoid shipwrecks several years ago. Castor would later die in a fight. But at Pollux’s request to Zeus, the two brothers will end up sharing Pollux’s immortality. Castor being the son of a human and Pollux that of a god namely Zeus. The latter then granted the two brothers a place in heaven. According to legend, this is how the Gemini constellation was formed.
