These plots included what he believed was a fixed-point star\u2014in reality, this object would turn out to be Neptune!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interestingly, Neptune was the first planet discovered through mathematical prediction rather than direct observation. In 1846, <a href=\"https:\/\/starchild.gsfc.nasa.gov\/docs\/StarChild\/whos_who_level2\/leverrier.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Urbain Le Verrier<\/a> calculated the location of a new planet that he believed must be perturbing the orbit of Uranus. In fact, it&#8217;s the only known large moon with a retrograde orbit in the entire solar system. This could be because Triton was once an independent object captured by Neptune&#8217;s gravity. Additionally, Triton has a very thin atmosphere, and its surface is marked by icy volcanoes and geysers that spew nitrogen gas deep into space.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Furthermore, Triton may possess a subsurface ocean that could potentially <a href=\"https:\/\/osr.org\/en-uk\/blog\/astronomy-uk\/ten-places-in-our-solar-system-that-could-support-life\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">harbour life<\/a>.
