The Gateway Foundation has begun construction of a spaceport called Von Braun Station. The name is a tribute to German aerospace engineer Dr. Werner Von Braun. The spaceport’s design includes a rotating ring concept. Why does the port need to rotate? The rotation provides artificial gravity, which is necessary for the proper functioning of the human body. Arthur C. Clark’s novel <\/span><\/span>2001: A Space Odyssey<\/span><\/span><\/em> featured a rotating space station and was made into a film by Stanley Kubrick under the same name.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Weightlessness problems<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

Astronauts who have spent long periods in space suffer from some serious medical problems. NASA conducted the\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>twin study<\/span><\/span><\/a> \u00a0to find out what happened to the astronaut twins named Mark and Scott Kelly. Identical twins share the same genetic makeup. The twin studies provided scientists with an opportunity to study how the environment affects our health, independent of the physical variations that occur normally between most of us as individuals. Scott provided a test case for measuring in space, and Mark provided a baseline test case for comparing those measurements on Earth.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
